Charming, spacious, accommodating, and historic. All of these describe the Old Riverton Inn and my stay. The owners, Pauline & Mark set the standard for being so nice and helpful! This is a must stay for anyone looking to stay over and fly fish, antique, skiing, or just visit this area.
The Inn is located in Riverton, CT, a small village within the town of Barkhamsted. It's also home to the Farmington River, a year round tail water, and cold-water fishery that is rated one the the top 100 places to fly fish in the United States!
I called the day I was leaving (last minute) to make a reservation and Pauline could not have been more helpful! I met Pauline when I arrived later then expected and was greated warmly. I was amazed by the historic charm and spaciousness of the Inn.
The room was large, super-clean, and had air conditioning - a must on a 95 degree day! I fished across the street in the Hitchcock Pool on the Farmington River and then headed back to the Inn. I drove to New Hartford for a bite to eat (15 minutes away) and went to bed. The room had cable TV, wifi, but I never even got to use it. I went to bed and slept sound. The Inn is quiet and and awesome place to relax.
The Inn has 12 rooms and dates to the late 1700's, it is also home to numerous antiques including many from the famous Hitchcock Chair Company (down the road). It was also a stagecoach stop on the route to Albany and is listed on the National Register of historic places.
I highly recommend this place, you couldn't be in better hands if you are visiting the area. The Inn is fantastic and the owners are some of the nicest people I have met.
It is a wonderful old Inn. No, it's not cheap, but if you want a hideaway spot in the country with wonderful, helpful owners and very good food, you found it. Riverton is so small it isn't even a town - or a village - it's a hamlet! And literally down the road and around the corner is the Hitchcock Chair Company - abandoned early this century, it's been reborn and has classic American furniture made the old way. So have lunch at the Inn, shop for great furniture and come back to the Inn to be pampered for dinner and a fine room.
The Old Riverton Inn is everything you could ask for when it comes to a quaint New England B&B. The Telford's (Inn Keepers) are wonderful people and will do anything to help. The Inn usually organizes dinners on special events (Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, etc), and they are fantastic fine dining with an amazing atmosphere. If you ever need to get bonus points with your significant other - a dinner and stay here will surely help!
